September Reading at Art Truckee

  • Art Truckee 10072 Donner Pass Road Truckee, CA, 96161 United States (map)

Join us for a night of poetry, prose, art and wine at Art Truckee!

Dorothy Rice is a San Francisco native, now living in Sacramento with her husband and the youngest of five children. After a 30-year career in environmental protection, culminating with four years as the Executive Director of the State Water Resources Control Board, Rice retired to pursue a long-delayed passion, writing. She earned an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of California, Riverside at 60.

Rice now writes stories and essays about art, family and other things and may one day muster the courage to tackle topics of state bureaucracy and climbing the civil service ladder. Her work has appeared in the Rumpus,Still Point Arts Quarterly, Brain, Child Magazine, Brevity online, Hobart, the Louisville Review and a few others. The Reluctant Artist: Joseph Rice, 1918-2011, published by Shanti Arts in November 2015, is her first book. It is a beautifully-crafted art book and memoir, the story of one man’s singular dedication to art, absent any apparent interest in public recognition or acknowledgement. It is also the story of what it was like to be that man’s daughter, during the turbulent 60’s and 70’s in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Peg Alford Pursell is the author of the forthcoming book of flash and hybrid prose, SHOW HER A FLOWER, A BIRD, A SHADOW (ELJ Publications). Her work has been published in the Journal of Compressed Arts, RHINO, VOLT, among others, and shortlisted for the Flannery O’Connor Award.

She produces Why There Are Words, the acclaimed Bay Area reading series she founded six years ago, and is the founding editor of WTAW Press, an independent literary publisher of books.  www.pegalfordpursell.com
